Naphthoquinones

Naphthaquinones are dark yellow pigments with a range of pharmacological properties. Some have antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties. Examples include:

  • Juglone from Julgans nigra/cineraria (Black Walnut) which is both a laxative and a vermifuge
  • Plumbagin from Drosera rotundifolia is cytotoxic at high does and immunostimulating in lower doses
  • Lapachol from Tabebuia sp (Pau D’arco)
